Back in 2010 I was working a really shitty job and hating almost everything about life. I had lost any ‘spark’ that I may ever have had and I needed desperately to change things up. After work one night I went and had dinner at a friends house and she suggested (or maybe I suggested and she agreed) that it would be a good idea to go back to school and study something that I’m passionate about. it wasn’t the first time I had had this discussion with someone but for some reason or another, this time I really listened to her (or myself).
A couple of days later I was reading Melbourne’s mX “newspaper” on the way home from work when I noticed an advertisement for an RMIT information session about mid-year intake for some of their media and Communications subjects. One subject in particular stood out to me, something called Creative Industries. I made up my mind to attend the session and did so, I think, the very next night.
The information session was, in hindsight, not all that great but because of where my head was at at that present time i was super excited about taking such a course. I asked questions during the session (not something I ever do) and I stayed behind afterwards to ask more (again, unlike me). Everything seemed perfect for me and I decided right then and there, despite the somewhat daunting costs involved, to apply.
I took with me the application pack and all relevant information and started my application as I rode the train home that evening. part of the application process was to provide two examples of any creative work I had done that, I’m assuming, would demonstrate that I had at least a modicum of talent to work with. I already had one such piece – a very personal story i wrote that I’m still not so comfortable posting here – but needed a second.
On that same train ride I tried to thinkk of all the reasons I wanted to do this course in the hope that I could find something to write a story about. Instead, the more I thought about the list I was creating in my head, the more I realised that this list was the exact type of creative work that demonstrates I have talent; a voice if you will.
So here is that list. It’s pretty amateur stuff looking back on it but it’s irreverent and occasionally humorous (sort of like me) and it gives you a good idea of my writing style. Sure it lacks polish and conviction but if you read this and then read some of my stories or what not, I’ll bet you can see just how much the course helped me.
As always, feedback is appreciated.
